I Know what it Feels Like to Go Through a Divorce
Having been through a difficult divorce myself, back in 1995, I understand how it feels to experience the “avalanche of issues” that often comes with a divorce. My heart ached thinking about what my children were going through. My vision of my future disintegrated before my eyes. The legal system was expensive, scary and unpredictable. My financial future looked uncertain. The process tested me in ever fiber of my being!
I made it through with flying colors. I learned about the legal system and negotiating strategy. My organizational skills helped me handle the voluminous paper work. My spiritual practice helped me use the divorce as a springboard for my own development and fulfillment.
My promise to you is that I will try to give to you the benefit of all my 30+ years of experience in this work.
You may be wondering, “Why anyone would want to work in the divorce arena?” It’s so important because how the divorce goes often affects the rest of your life! Sometimes I feel like a midwife…helping people give birth to the rest of their life. It’s very satisfying to me. In fact, about 95% of my practice involves divorce work in one form or another. It’s my focus, my passion, and continually fascinating, even after all these years.
Your Children are a Top Priority
Throughout my career, my work has centered on helping families provide the best possible environments for their children. I am a licensed psychotherapist with over 30 years’ experience in helping families in crisis, particularly divorce. For the past 20 years, I have performed evaluations for the court systems in Colorado and Illinois regarding parenting time and decision-making. In addition, I have extensive experience in handling hundreds of cases of child abuse and neglect and sexual abuse. I am a former board member of the Boulder Interdisciplinary Committee on Child Custody Issues.
Conflict Resolution Options Might Help You Avoid Court
I will always look for ways to helpful you resolve your situation as peacefully as possible, but without “giving up the farm.” About 8 years ago, I received training in divorce mediation and began mediating. In 2004, I began teaching mediation through the Institute for Advanced Dispute Resolution. In 2002, I received training in Collaborative Family Law and have helped train attorneys in numerous presentations in collaborative divorce for the Boulder County Bar Association. I am currently co-authoring a book on Divorce Mediation. I am interested in interdisciplinary approaches to conflict resolution and have, for example, given presentations in the use of metaphor in mediation and in collaborative divorce, Aikido as a body-based reference for handling high conflict clients, and the use of reflective practice in mediation.
Practical Wisdom
I will always look for practical ways for you to move through your divorce and new life. I am certified in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a therapy approach that is known for achieving effective results in a short period of time. My book, “Divorce Survival and Recovery” (1995), details 30 simple and easy to use techniques to use during the loss of a relationship. Sometimes, practical wisdom needs to be applied to the financial decisions you will need to make.
My Personal Life
I can provide you with information about how to guide your children through a divorce or remarriage. Here’s why. A few years after my divorce, I did one of the smartest things in my life…. I married my kind, generous-hearted husband. So I have now experienced a difficult marriage (my first) and a happy marriage (now). I have two wonderful children from my first marriage, a daughter in college who is majoring in psychology, and a son in high school whose passion is physical fitness.
On the lighter side…I love hiking in the mountains of Colorado and walking in nature. Even though I grew up in New York City, from the moment I came to the Rocky Mountains, I felt like I was home. I love being among pine trees. I also enjoy hugging babies and animals. For some reason, I am particularly fascinated by pigs. Something about those earnest little eyes and curly tails….

And now…you may be wondering, “WHY does she wear a turban?!”
I have been a practitioner of the Sikh faith since 1972. My turban is an outward, public expression of my deeply held, personal beliefs and goals: As a Sikh, I strive to have all my actions reflect personal and professional integrity. Naturally, I do not believe in converting anyone because Sikhs honor all religions. Religious freedom includes the right not to believe in any religion. I first began meditating in 1967 while studying at Smith College. My daily practice of yoga, meditation and prayer helps me maintain my perspective and inner calm.
Other Interesting Tidbits
In 2005, I founded the Women’s Global Forum, a consortium of over 100 organizations and individuals who work on a global scale to alleviate suffering.
I am a graduate of Smith College where I was a First Group Scholar and on the Dean’s List.
I spent my Junior Year Abroad in Italy and loved the culture, the language and the people. I speak Italian, French, and a little Spanish.
